TourMedEau is a project funded by the European Union under the program Ciudad - Cooperation In Urban Development And Dialogue - which aims to develop a system of sustainable water management in tourist areas of the Mediterranean.

The program CIUDAD, funded by the European Neighourhood Partnership Instrument (ENPI), aims to help local governments in the ENPI region to improve their ability to plan for a long term urban development which is at the meantime sustainable and integrated by respecting the principles of good governance. The program promotes mutual understanding, exchange of experiences and cooperation between local EU actors and partner countries of ENPI region in the implementation of joint projects.

In this scenario, TourMedEau will help promote dialogue and cooperation between the governments of both shores of the Mediterranean in order to improve environmental sustainability in urban areas through a more efficient public management of water services.

The study and design of a wastewater treatment plant and water works for its reuse in agriculture and tourism will allow the exchange of experiences and expertise on wastewater treatment among Mediterranean countries leading to the dissemination of the best techniques .

In detail, the project includes the following activities:

  • Analysis of the state of the art and preliminary activities that enable the acquisition of a full overview of territories’ needs
  • Construction of a shared process
  • Exchange of experiences and competences transfer
  • Expansion and completion of a wastewater treatment plant in Tunisia or Morocco
  • Dissemination of project results

The main expected results are:

  1. Promote a model of sustainable water management compatible with the strong tourism development in the selected locations in the project
  2. Develop institutional partnerships between local authorities of the Mediterranean shores on environmental issues linked with water management and improve the environmental sustainability of the countries
  3. Improve the integration of southern Mediterranean countries through the involvement of public administrations to promote methodologies and a development process based on water resource improvement
  4. Promote the use of purified water to restore the level of subsoil
  5. Promote the rehabilitation of traditional farming, nurseries and historical and cultural traditions and improve the regional and local governance skills
