MED PORTS - Development of clusters in port logistics services of the Mediterranean Basin
MEDPORTS is a project funded by the European Union under the program INVEST IN MED which aims at developing sustainable trade relationships, investments and enterprise partnerships between the two rims of the Mediterranean.
In this scenario, MEDPORTS will contribute to the integration of Southern and European Countries in the logistics industry, in order to develop an integrated transport system in the Mediterranean Basin.
Even if target of the initiative are SMEs and other organizations operating in port logistics and transport, the entire port management system of the port areas involved in the project (Tangier – Morocco, Tunis-Radès – Tunisia, Port Said – Egypt, Cagliari - Italy) will benefit from the project.
The project will improve technological and management competences at a Euro-Mediterranean level and strengthen relationships among Business Supporting Organiaztions (BSO) and SMEs, through the following activities: definition of an Action Plan for the development of Smes’ clusters operating in port logistics at the above mentioned port areas; short missions of Med Partners to Eu Countries; training courses; workshops and b2b meetings. All these actions will bring to new business opportunities.
In detail, the planned projects activities are:
- Definition of an Action Plan for the development of clusters of SMEs operating in port logistics in the port areas of Tunis-Radès, Tangier and Port Said
- Organization of Short Term Missions of Med Partners (GAFI and CC Tunis) to Europe (Cagliari) to facilitate experience sharing
- Implementation of the training course “Innovation and clustering of port logistics services in the Mediterranean Basin”
- Organization in Cagliari of a B2B Meeting for port logistics SMEs
- Carrying out of a thematic workshop in Cairo to discuss on the obtained results and the potential of logistics industry for the development of regional and transnational clusters
The main expected results are:
- Inform and train 20 representatives of the involved Chambers of Commerce and Business Supporting Organizations about the promotion strategies for innovation and clustering in port logistics industry
- Inform 5 representatives of Med partners organization about European practices and methods of port logistics management and 25 SMEs operating in the port of Cagliari about the MED PORTS initiative and the involvement of Med Partners
- Train 20 attendees about the innovative management processes for port logistics systems and promotional strategies for Mediterranean SMEs and clusters, obtain 20 Commitments of Training Replication from courses attendees
- Organize at least 75 meetings for Egyptian, Italian, Moroccan and Tunisian SMEs
- Inform 100 representatives of SMEs and stakeholders about port logistics industry’s potential and about the clusters’ promotion in the Euro-Mediterranean area
The total value of the initiative, which will take place from June to December 2010, amounts to 114.670 euros, of which the 75%, amounting to 79.503 euros, funded by the European Union through the Invest in Med programme.
The project was submitted to the European Commission by a partnership consisting of Egyptian, Italian and Tunisian partners.
